2020 marks the start of a new decade and a new Parents’ Voice team! Although we were upset to see long-time Communications Officer, Bek, leave us at the end of last year, we are excited to introduce you all to our newest member.
Meet Evie
Hi everyone! I am really excited to take up this new role. I love the work that Parents’ Voice do, and I’m looking forward to becoming a driving force for positive change.
I can’t wait to get to know all of you, and for you to get to know me.
Just a little bit about me
I was born and raised in the South East suburbs by a hardworking single mother. My dream as a kid was to grow up and become an Art Teacher (which meant I was constantly covered in Texta marks).
As you could guess, I didn’t become an Art Teacher in the end. Instead, I found my passion for communications and was accepted into a Bachelor of Art at Deakin University. I graduated with majors in Media, Film & TV and Public Relations at the beginning of 2019.
Although I had a degree, I had no real-world experience. That was when I was introduced to Parents’ Voice by my good friend Meg (some of you may remember her from our last meet the team blog).
I hadn’t heard of Parents’ Voice before then (to be fair I’m not their target audience, as I am not a parent), but I was instantly intrigued by the work that they had done and what they continue to fight for on a daily basis.
My journey with Parents’ Voice
I was lucky enough to be accepted as a volunteer in June of last year and never looked back. Parents’ Voice was my introduction to the Public Health sector and I joined the team just in time to help out with their ChangeMakers Program.
Working on this project gave me the opportunity to directly interact with parents and see the impact that Parents’ Voice has on its members. It also gave me insight into the everyday pressures and difficulties that parents face when fighting for healthier options for their kids.
Not long after the conclusion of the ChanegMakers Program, Bek decided to leave the team. I was saddened to see her go and dubious to apply for the new position (mainly because of the huge shoes that she left behind), but I was elated when I found out I had gotten the role after a long a gruelling selection process.
I have enjoyed every moment that I have spent at Parents’ Voice so far. I wouldn’t trade my experiences, friends and work at Parents’ Voice for anything and I can’t wait to continue to grow with them and you in 2020 and beyond.
High hopes for the future
As a recent graduate, I hope to be continually learning and evolving in my new role. I also hope to bring my own unique perspective and skill set to this position. But most of all I hope to help parents, like you, to create the changes that they want to see in the world.
Therefore, I would love to hear from you! What do you want to see? What content are you interested in? What issues are you facing?
